Prefer a Professional Bound Journal?
Many states require a permanently bound (not spiral) journal. A professional hardcover notary journal typically costs $15–$25 and provides tamper-evident binding that meets strict state requirements.
Look for journals with numbered pages, a built-in thumbprint pad, and space for at least 400 entries.

Do I need a notary journal? +
Some states legally require notaries to maintain a journal of all notarial acts, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah. Even in states where it’s not required, keeping a journal is strongly recommended as a best practice for your protection.
What information should be in a notary journal? +
A complete notary journal entry should include: date and time of the notarial act, type of act performed, type of document, signer’s name and address, identification type and number, fee charged, and the signer’s signature. Some states require additional fields.
Can I use a digital notary journal? +
Many states now allow electronic notary journals, especially those that have authorized Remote Online Notarization (RON). However, some states still require a physical, bound journal. Check your state’s requirements before going digital.
