PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification — Everything You Need to Know in 2026

PTCB stands for Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. The PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) is the most widely recognized pharmacy tech credential in the United States. Most hospital systems and retail pharmacy chains require it, and many states require it for licensure as a pharmacy technician.

The exam has 90 questions and a 110-minute time limit, administered at Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide. The passing score is 1400 on a 1600-point scaled score. Eligibility has two pathways: complete a PTCB-recognized education or training program, or accumulate at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience under a licensed pharmacist. Most candidates coming from a training program qualify under pathway 1.
