California Esthetician State Board Exam — Everything You Need to Know in 2026

The California esthetician state board exam is the written knowledge test required for your esthetician license in California. It is administered by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology through PSI testing centers. You have 90 minutes to answer 85 questions and need 75% to pass.

California eliminated the practical exam for estheticians — the written test is the only licensing exam. The exam covers infection control and safety, skin analysis and disorders, facial treatments, hair removal, anatomy and physiology, and California law.

An esthetician license in California covers skin care services: facials, chemical exfoliants, waxing, and related treatments. It does not cover hair services, which require a cosmetology or barber license.

You need 70% to pass — that's at least 60 correct out of 85 scored questions.

Your school can submit your hours to the BBC when you are within 50 hours of completion, so you can schedule the exam before you formally graduate.
