The California cosmetology state board exam is the written knowledge test required to get your cosmetology license in California. It is administered by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) through PSI testing centers. You have 90 minutes to answer 100 questions and need 75% to pass.

California eliminated the separate practical exam years ago. The written test is the only licensing exam — your practical skills are evaluated during your school hours.
