Question 1

Which observation during mealtime should be reported to the nurse immediately?

Question 2

What position should a resident be placed in before assisting them with eating?

Answer: The resident should be in an upright sitting position, ideally at a 90-degree angle, to reduce the risk of aspiration during eating.

Question 3

How long should a CNA wait between offering bites of food to a resident who needs feeding assistance?

Answer: The CNA should wait until the resident has fully chewed and swallowed the previous bite before offering the next one, typically allowing enough time to prevent choking.

Question 4

What is the CNA's responsibility when a resident refuses to eat?

Answer: The CNA must respect the resident's right to refuse, document the refusal, and report it to the nurse so the care plan can be re-evaluated.

Question 5

What does the term 'dysphagia' mean, and why is it important for a CNA to know?
